Blades too strong for Donegal

Junior Section Match Report - Co. Donegal 2 - 5 Sheffield Utd

Sheffield United started the game the brighter of the two sides and their early efforts paid off when Angelo Capello lashed the ball home from close range.

Donegal responded well. A surging run from midfield saw Darragh Ellison’s driven shot saved smartly by the Sheffield keeper. With 7 minutes on the clock, Donegal got the goal their response deserved. A well delivered corner seen a header directed towards goal before the unfortunate Dylan O’Brien put the ball into his own net to make it 1-1. Not long after, Donegal had the ball in the net again when Blades keeper Marcus Dewhurst seen the ball slip through his fingers and into the net. An error he certainly won’t want to see again.

Against the run of play, United found an equaliser. A corner swung in from the right hand side was headed home by defender Thomas Weaver. That goal made the pendulum swing Sheffield's way as they began to mount attack after attack but failed to trouble the keeper.

Sheffield Utd started the second half like they started the first. The ball was clipped over the top of the defence and Sam Ackroyd made no mistake in rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home.

Donegal struggled to get a foot on the ball in the second half as Sheffield United grew in confidence. The passes were being strung together and the attacks were coming thick and fast. In a half of few chances, Sheffield tested Donegal keeper Eoin McGing from distance but he dealt with it comfortably.

With 5 minutes remaining, Donegal mounted their only genuine attack of the half. They seemed to have carved an opening in the defence but the striker was deemed offside. Then, straight from the resulting free kick, the ball was played forward and put into the box for Jack Kelly to finish and make it 4-2 to Sheffield. Sheffield added to their tally in the dying minutes, a well delivered corner was headed home. In a game with plenty of goals Sheffield emerged victorious. Final score Sheffield Utd 5-2 Co. Donegal.
